Jan Vertonghen’s mother claims her son is missing home — even though he signed a new deal with Tottenham earlier this month that could keep him at the club until 2020.

Ria Mattheeuws told Belgian radio: “Jan is starting to miss home. I see him coming back soon — we will see. Home could also mean Amsterdam. His girlfriend is from there.”

There is little chance of Spurs allowing Vertonghen, who turns 30 in April, to leave the club at any time in the near future, however. Vertonghen also said recently how settled his family were in London.

The Austria defender has had limited playing time at Tottenham this season, making only five appearances, but he retains admirers in Germany.

Standard Sport understands Southampton are also following Wimmer, with their centre-back Virgil van Dijk interesting Chelsea and Manchester City.

Elsewhere, Spurs are selling tickets for £5 for the home leg of their Europa League last-32 tie against Gent at Wembley.

Aware that they will struggle to attract the capacity crowds that attended their Champions League group fixtures, Spurs have dropped prices and — initially — only seats in the bottom two tiers will be on sale.
