Jan Vertonghen has praised Mauricio Pochettino for giving Tottenham's wing backs "freedom" to attack within the side's new formation.
Pochettino rarely strayed from a preferred 4-2-3-1 set up last season but has tweaked his tactics on several occasions this term.
Spurs lined up with a three-man defence as part of a 3-4-2-1 system against Hull City on Wednesday night, which proved to be an immediate success.
Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier were assured in defence while the likes of Kyle Walker and Danny Rose excelled in wide areas.

The two wide men both provided an assist for Christian Eriksen and Vertonghen believes it is positive they have been handed a license to push forward.
“It was the plan to get them forward a bit more and it worked out perfectly," he told the club's official website.
"They came up with two great assists for Christian [Eriksen] and we can say that they are two of the best full-backs in the league.
“You can see that they get a lot more freedom when we play with the five like we did tonight.
"Danny and Kyle know that there are three guys at the back and I think that helps them to get forward," he added.
Pochettino must now decide whether to continue with a three-man defence when Spurs welcome Burnley to White Hart Lane on Sunday afternoon.
Sean Dyche's side have failed to win on their travels this term and the north Londoners will be expected to produce another convincing victory to keep pace with their rivals.
