Joe Gomez has returned to Liverpool after withdrawing from the England squad with an ankle injury.

The Liverpool centre-back limped out in the early minutes of England’s 1-0 win over the Netherlands in Amsterdam on Friday and will continue his rehabilitation with his club side.

The FA have confirmed that no replacement will be called up for Tuesday’s friendly against Italy, leaving Gareth Southgate with a squad of 24 to choose from.

Eric Dier, Alfie Mawson, Harry Maguire and James Tarkowski are among the defender’s who did not start in the Johan Cruyff Arena and will hope to feature against the Azzurri in the final friendly before Southgate names his World Cup squad.
