Joey Barton’s future high on the agenda for QPR hierarchy

The future of Queens Park Rangers captain Joey Barton will be discussed by the club today as the hierarchy meet to discuss their plans for next season.

Barton is facing a lengthy ban from the Football Association after being charged with two acts of violent conduct during the club’s 3-2 defeat at Manchester City on Sunday.

The 29-year-old was sent off for elbowing Carlos Tevez but he was also seen to kick out at Sergio Aguero and aim a headbutt at Vincent Kompany after being shown the red card.

To make matters worse, he tried to justify his actions on his twitter account and also abused pundits Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker.

Barton has until 6pm today to respond to the charge but there is a possibility he could be suspended for the first 10 games of next season such is the seriousness of the offences.

QPR are still to condemn his behaviour in public but chief executive Phillip Beard admits Barton will be talked about by the board in a meeting at the club’s training ground.

He said: “We start planning for next season immediately and we will look at the squad and the business we want to do in the transfer market. I am meeting today with [manager] Mark Hughes, our technical director Mike Rigg, [chairman] Tony Fernandes and [vice-chairman] Amit Bhatia.

“Joey is part of a 25-man squad. We will look at every part of the club and at individual players. We will review our processes and how we work with players.

“Social media is very firmly on the agenda so we can work with our players better to understand what they need to think about.”

Barton signed a four-year deal worth £70,000-a-week when he joined from Newcastle last summer.
