Manchester City have confirmed the signing of John Stones from Everton, with the centre-back penning a six-year deal at the Etihad Stadium outfit.

The club released a statement on Tuesday to announce the transfer - which is expected to be in the region of £50m - shortly after Uefa had listed Stones in City's Champions League squad for their play-off match with Steaua Bucharest next week.

Despite no details of the fee being released by City, Everton confirmed the transfer was a "record" for the club.

Stones, whose contract at City will expire in 2022, will now wear the number 24 shirt at the club and becomes Pep Guardiola's eighth signing of the summer after Ilkay Gundogan, Nolito, Aleksandar Zinchenko, Aaron Mooy, Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus and Marlos Moreno.

Speaking about his switch to City, Stones told the club's official website: "I'm absolutely delighted to sign for City and now the deal's done I'm looking forward to the next stage in my career.

"I've obviously seen what's going on here at the Etihad, it's an ambitious Club with a great manager so I can't wait to get stuck in and help achieve the goals.

"I know it will be tough getting a place in this team but I'm determined to become the best player I can be and help us to success.

"I had a wonderful time with Everton and wish them and their fans all the best but now I'll give my all for City."

City manager Guardiola added: "We want to help John show his quality with us and improve on what he has already achieved.

"I like the way he plays the game and I'm looking forward to welcoming him into the squad."

Stones, who joined the Toffees from Barnsley for a fee of £3million in January 2013, was a target for Jose Mourinho at Chelsea last summer, but the Portuguese coach was left frustrated after Everton rejected four bids from the Blues, the last of which was for £37million.

It is believed that Mourinho, now at Manchester United, was keen on renewing his interest in the England centre-back after arriving at Old Trafford in May but he went on to sign young defender Eric Bailly from Villarreal instead.
