Chelsea captain John Terry has been ruled out of Chelsea’s FA Cup Fifth round tie against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Terry sustained a hamstring injury against Newcastle and stayed behind in London to work on his fitness in midweek, rather than travelling with the squad when they faced Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Branislav Ivanovic partnered Gary Cahill in the 35-year-old’s absence and manager Guus Hiddink says that their performance means that Terry doesn’t have to hurry back.

He said: “John will not be fit for this weekend. I saw him this morning, he was with the physios. Yesterday he was training a bit on the pitch, but there are still too many problems for him to be fit for the weekend. It is still the same issues.

“We have another week and I hope he will be available for the next game (Southampton away on January 27). I can’t predict it, but we have to be a bit cautious with him as well because he likes to be there every day. We know him, you know him – he loves to play.

“Of course it is disappointing to be without him because he has been the leader of this team and at this club for years.

“But on the other hand, I am not going to complain or moan. The guys who are putting their effort in his place have my confidence. Against PSG the defenders had a decent performance.”
