Charlton's disappointment at having to settle for the League One play-offs will be eased by the £3million they will receive for Jonjo Shelvey when he joins Liverpool.

The 18-year-old midfielder signed a new deal with the club last September when it was expected he would leave.

Shelvey is now ready for the big leap and Charlton will thank him for the loyalty that will result in a much bigger fee.

Without Shelvey, Charlton could only draw at Exeter and manager Phil Parkinson said: "The play-offs are the worst-case scenario now."
