Football agent Jorge Mendes has been named as the world's most powerful football agent - and the second-most powerful agent in world sport by Forbes.

Mendes' ranking as the leading football agent, and second in the world, was confirmed on Wednesday after Forbes revealed the 49-year-old had negotiated contracts for his clients worth £627.88million - earning him a commission of at least £62.76million in the process.

Such footballers on the books of the Portuguese's agency, Gestifute, include Chelsea pair Diego Costa and Radamel Falcao, Real Madrid stars Cristiano Ronaldo and James Rodriguez, former Manchester United winger Angel Di Maria and Manchester City's Eliaquim Mangala.

Behind Mendes, who has been recognised as FIFA's Agent of the Year three times in the past, as the second-most powerful football agent - and fourth in the world - is Jonathan Barnett.

Barnett has a staggering 143 clients on his books, including Real Madrid and Wales forward Gareth Bale, United defender Luke Shaw and City and England goalkeeper Joe Hart, which has earned him £28.89million in commission after securing £288.6million in contracts for his players.

The only other football agent to make it into Forbes' top 10 most powerful sports agents list is German Volker Struth, who has made £27.84m in commission through representing Bundesliga stars such as Marco Reus, Mario Gotze and Toni Kroos.

But Mendes, Barnett and Struth are eclipsed by baseball agent and lawyer Scott Boras - who is Forbes' most powerful representative in world sport with commission earnings of £76.88million.

The list also reveals that baseball agents feature the most in Forbes' top 50 (13), with American football (10), basketball (10), hockey (eight), football (seven), and golf (two) making up the rest of the list.
