Jose Mourinho's former assistant at Real Madrid has revealed that the Chelsea boss is 'not good' after overseeing such a poor start to the season at Stamford Bridge.

The Portuguese tactician led the Blues to their fourth Premier League title last term but has seen his side record just three top-flight victories in 10 games during the early stages of the current campaign.

Mourinho's position in west London has been the subject of intense speculation in recent days and Aitor Karanka is adamant that his former Bernabeu colleague is in need of support.

The Spaniard is still in regular contact with Mourinho and spoke to him after Chelsea's 2-1 defeat to West Ham on Saturday.

"He's not good because he's a winner and when he's not winning, he's not good. But I think his friends have to be here to support him.

“When he was winning trophies, the Champions League and the league, everybody was saying how good he is. Now his friends are the the people who have to say he's the best and is going to keep on being the best.”

The Middlesbrough boss, whose team are currently fourth in the Championship, believes that Mourinho has much to learn from Chelsea's difficult run of form and has tipped the 52-year-old to continue to be successful.

“I think he can learn from episodes like this. He is learning because it's the first time he has been in this position.

“He was always fighting for and winning trophies and now he's not at the bottom of the table, but he's far from the top position. I'm sure he is learning," the Spaniard insisted.

“I'm sure with his knowledge and players and staff he will be successful really soon.

“He's the best and the strongest and I'm sure he will be successful again. All the focus is on him now and you have to learn every single day and keep going. I want to wish him all the best.”
