Jose Mourinho's faith in Luke Shaw shows Manchester United boss is capable of more than tough love approach

Luke Shaw has revived his Manchester United career thanks to the help of his manager Jose Mourinho.

After a struggling to hold down a first-team role during the manager's first two seasons at Old Trafford, Shaw is now making his strongest claim yet to be the club's undisputed first-choice left-back.

The 22-year-old is the only outfield player at the club to have been ever-present during the first four games of the new season, with Mourinho’s faith silencing those who cast doubt on his defender's future at the club not too long ago.

Standard Sport’s Manchester correspondent James Robson looks back at Shaw’s remarkable turnaround and recalls one particular incident that highlights the side of Mourinho not many will have seen before.

“Mourinho rang Luke Shaw up when he was off in Dubai on holiday, he was actually in a training camp, trying to get fit for this season.

“Mourinho rang him and said: ‘I know what you can do, you can be the best left back in the world, and we’re going to do that this season.’

“That wasn’t tough love- that was an arm around his shoulder and that really had an impact on Shaw."
