Jose Mourinho says Manchester United have ‘paid the price’ for the ‘inconsistent attitude’ of his players

Jose Mourinho says his Manchester United side have paid the price for an inconsistent attitude this season, having dropped points against sides they would be more than expected to beat.

Despite bouncing back from defeat with a win against Bournemouth on Wednesday night, that loss to West Brom on Sunday – which confirmed the Premier League title for rivals Manchester City – still irks Mourinho.

Further to West Brom, United have also lost to Newcastle and Huddersfield this season, while drawing against the likes of Southampton, Stoke and Swansea, all three of whom are stuck in a relegation battle.

While losses have also come against their top six counterparts, they’ve been balanced out by wins in the reverse fixtures, with Arsenal still to come.

"I think we are inconsistent, and we are inconsistent many times in our attitude. You pay the price," he said.

"We lost points against teams who are probably going to be relegated, or are in this group of the relegation fight. We lost three points against West Brom. We lost two points against all the other teams involved in that fight, Stoke, Southampton.

"This season of course was a much better season in the Premier League for us than the last one.

"But we need to be more consistent in our approach. We should have 10 more points than we have. No doubts."

Mourinho still has the prize of an FA Cup on offer this season, with Tottenham – against whom they lost 2-0 at Wembley in January - standing in the way of a place in the final on Saturday.
