Kenny Dalglish left speechless by Suarez display

Double: Luis Suarez (centre) was Liverpool's key man once again

Luis Suarez again left manager Kenny Dalglish speechless as he fired Liverpool into the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup with a 2-1 victory at Stoke.

With the Reds trailing to a Kenwyne Jones header just before half-time, Suarez nutmegged Ryan Shotton and then curled a beauty into the corner in the 54th minute before heading the winner five minutes from time.

And Dalglish quickly said of his matchwinner: "I ran out of words to describe him after a week when he came to our place. It was a fantastic goal but I don't think anyone would have expected him to score with a tap-in.

"He had that many chances and if he'd taken one before it might have been a wee bit more comfortable for us but it was worth waiting for."

Liverpool had already tasted defeat at Stoke this season having lost 1-0 to a Jon Walters penalty in the Barclays Premier League in September, and they went behind again with a goal of their own making.

Uruguayan defender Sebastian Coates, making only his second start for the club, dallied too long on the ball in the left-back position and was robbed by Walters, who crossed for Jones to head into the far corner.

"You're not going to come here and go away unscathed," added Dalglish.

"They normally get a goal from somewhere, that's why they've been successful. We're disappointed to lose any goal but the way they came back from it is more important to us. It's never the mistake, it's the way they reacted to it."

Stoke matched Liverpool in playing a strong team despite their Europa League commitments and, although he conceded their half-time lead was fortunate, Potters boss Tony Pulis was left frustrated by a couple of referee Lee Probert's decisions.

Walters saw a first-half header from a Rory Delap long throw chalked off for an alleged push by Ryan Shawcross on Jose Reina while Pulis felt Peter Crouch was fouled in the area as Stoke searched for an equaliser.

Pulis said: "I thought Liverpool were the better team in the first half, they played much better than us, they looked brighter, (Andy) Carroll and Suarez caused problems and we didn't get to grips with it. To come in 1-0 at half-time was very generous for us.

"The goal from the long throw looked a very soft decision but the worst decision of the night was in the 89th minute when Peter's pulled back, the lad's not even looking at the ball and brings him down to the ground.

"The referee's got a great view of it but doesn't give it. The disappointing thing is he's managed to see something in our box in the first half that not everybody can see, then second half everybody sees the incident with Crouch and he doesn't."
