Jurgen Klopp namechecks Tottenham as Premier League title contenders after busy summer spending spree

Jurgen Klopp has backed Tottenham for a Premier League title push during their first full season under Antonio Conte’s stewardship.

Even before an aggressive summer recruitment drive, Spurs had taken points off both Liverpool and Manchester City during the Italian’s watch and only look to have got stronger since.

Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma and Richarlison have all been signed as genuine first-team options while Clement Lenglet and Fraser Forster have both arrived to further pad out Conte’s squad.

A Premier League-winning manager as recently as 2017, the former Chelsea and Inter Milan coach confirms with a track-record of building teams who can challenge, particularly after enjoying the benefit of a full pre-season.

Such is the intensity of Conte’s work, star players Harry Kane and Heung-min Son were seen collapsing after a training session during the club’s pre-season tour in South Korea.

While closing the gap on two teams to have established themselves as Europe’s leading forces over the past few years will undoubtedly be a difficult task, Klopp has backed Conte’s Spurs - a team he urged to “do more” with their quality after a 1-1 draw in May - to improve.

“You have to look at Tottenham,” said Klopp to ESPN FC when asked about potential challengers.

“What they are doing at this moment, they were good last year and they didn’t get burst this year.”
