WSL leaders Arsenal will have to make do without star defender Leah Williamson after the England international suffered a “significant” hamstring injury.

Manager Jonas Eidevall rallied against the “almost inhuman” schedule the Gunners have faced in recent weeks after confirming that the 24-year-old could be out until the New Year.

An Arsenal statement confirmed on Tuesday: “Following Saturday’s match against Tottenham Hotspur, Leah Williamson experienced discomfort in her hamstring.

“Subsequent assessments and scans have confirmed that Leah has suffered a significant hamstring injury. Further consultations and assessments will take place, with Leah’s recovery and rehabilitation programme also being determined in the coming days.

“Everyone at the club will now be supporting and working hard with Leah to get her back on the pitch as soon as possible.”

Arsenal face their fifth game in a three-and-a-half week period when hosting HB Koge in the Champions League on Wednesday, with the competition taking place in between WSL matches and the recently rearranged 2020/21 FA Cup semi-final.

Williamson is also set to miss England’s World Cup qualifiers against Austria and Latvia later this month.

Arsenal’s Scottish defender Jen Beattie added: “You never want to see teammates go through something like that. She’s an unbelievable player and understandably a big loss, but we have a really good squad with great depth.”
