Leyton Orient players and staff have been told they will be paid their wages for March tomorrow — 13 days after the money was due in their accounts.

The League Two club, who look certain to be relegated to the National League, have endured the worst season in their history, with the wages situation the latest in a long line of problems.

Standard Sport understands Orient players have been told three times their wages will arrive within the next 24 hours, although it is understood some players remain sceptical about this and have had talks with the Professional Footballers’ Association.

Orient, who are 10 points adrift of safety, play at Luton on Friday. Last Saturday at Cambridge, Orient fielded a starting XI with only three players over the age of 20 because of injuries.

Under the terms of their contracts, it is thought the unpaid players are entitled to serve a two-week notice period on the club when their wages are delayed.

That would allow them to walk away as free agents if they had still not been paid 14 days after sending the letter. At this stage, no Orient player is believed to have taken this step.

The majority of players will be out of contract, anyway, in the summer.
