FIRST LEG: PSG 1 CHELSEA 1

By James Olley

Chelsea took a 36 minute lead through Branislav Ivanovic before Edinson Cavani equalised early in the second half to set up an enthralling second leg encounter at Stamford Bridge in three weeks’ time.

Jose Mourinho’s side were beaten 3-1 on this ground 10 months ago and required two late goals at home to advance to the semi-finals last season but this time they bring a more positive result back to west London.

Chelsea controlled possession in the opening period but PSG improved after the break with the visitors pushed back deep into their own half but held on for a valuable draw which includes the potentially decisive advantage of an away goal.

With a plethora of attacking talent on the pitch, the odds on three Chelsea defenders combining to open the scoring must have been astronomical.

But John Terry went to retrieve a ball on the left flank and swung in a cross which Gary Cahill deftly flicked on for Ivanovic to head past PSG goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu.

Chelsea led at the break but a lapse in concentration allowed the home side to equalise nine minutes after the restart.

Blaise Matuidi crossed from the left flank but Cahill had been drawn out of position towards the play, allowing the ball to float over his head. Cavani ghosted in behind him to nod the ball past a stranded Thibaut Courtois in the Chelsea goal.

Suddenly, Chelsea were rattled. Zlatan Ibrahimovic forced Courtois into another save before Cesar Azpilicueta blocked a goalbound follow-up from Ezequiel Lavezzi.

Chelsea’s attacking raids became increasingly isolated as the home side pushed for a second goal, with former Blues defender David Luiz heading a Lavezzi free-kick onto the roof of the net before Cavani toe-poked an effort just wide from close range.

Ibrahmovic tested Courtois in stoppage time but PSG could not find a way through.
