Brendan Rogers was pleased that his team didn't skip a beat in dispatching Aston Villa despite missing captain Steven Gerrard.

Liverpool have now picked up back-to-back victories as they close in on the Champions League places; keeping two clean sheets in the process.

"It was always going to be a difficult game," said Rodgers. "Aston Villa are a hard team to try to break down but we were very complete in our performance.

"We passed the ball around really well at times and our counter-attack was very good, and we probably should have exploited that more than we did.

"Importantly, when we had to defend at important moments of the game we stood up to the challenge and it is another clean sheet."

Liverpool have been in desperate need of a confidence boost following their patchy form in recent weeks, and Aston Villa, who have only scored 11 goals all season, proved to an fitting punching bag for Roger's men to find some form.

Rogers will be hoping that Gerrard can shake off his hamstring strain in time for the first leg of Liverpool's League cup tie with Chelsea on Tuesday. Resting his players is going to be tricky in the coming weeks as Liverpool will be playing four games in the next two weeks, and Rogers will be looking for a good result against Bolton in the FA Cup next Saturday.
