Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren is closing in on a €12m move to Zenit St-Petersburg.

The Croatia international will bring a six-year stay at Anfield to a close when he joins the Russian champions following the conclusion of the Premier League season.

Zenit had stepped up their pursuit of Lovren in recent weeks, making a firm approach to Reds sporting director Michael Edwards.

The Russian Premier League club had hoped to strike a cut-price deal but the presence of a 12-month extension option in the defender's contract effectively strengthened Liverpool's position.

Consequently, they have been able to recoup a relatively sizeable fee for a player who has served as Jurgen Klopp's fourth-choice centre-back of late.

Initially a regular start under Klopp, Lovren's chances have been limited in recent seasons by the form of Virgil van Dijk and the manager's preference for Joe Gomez and Joel Matip. as the Dutchman's partner.

However, the 30-year leaves Merseyside having played a role in Premier League, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup glory over the last two campaigns.
