Liverpool owners FSG will be ‘run out in a week’ if Super League plans cause Jurgen Klopp exit, says Carragher

Jamie Carragher has warned that Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) would be “run out” of the club in a week if their involvement in the controversial European Super League led to the departure of manager Jurgen Klopp.

Along with fellow Premier League ‘Big Six’ members Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham, LaLiga giants Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid and Serie A trio Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan, the reigning Premier League champions were on Sunday announced as one of 12 founder members of the new Super League.

The plans have been met by almost universal condemnation from across the world of football and beyond, with Klopp insisting before Monday night’s 1-1 draw at Leeds that his opinions “have not changed” since he publicly criticised the proposals in 2019.

Klopp appearing to be at odds with the concept of a Super League and Liverpool’s involvement as founder members has led to speculation that the German could even leave Anfield in the near future, though on Monday he refuted those claims at Elland Road.

“I heard today that I will resign but I feel responsible for the team, for the club and for the relationship we have with our fans. I will try to sort it somehow,” Klopp said.

Covering the game and the Super League announcement on a particularly compelling edition of Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football programme, Reds legend Carragher said that Liverpool supporters would not stand for losing Klopp over the issue.

"The biggest thing is everyone's against it ... Klopp spoke about this in 2019 and made his stance very clear," Carragher said.

"If Liverpool lose their manager on the back of this in the next 12 months, then the owners will be run out of that club in a week. I can assure you of that."

Speaking after the clash with Leeds, Klopp insisted the Super League decision had nothing to do with him or his players as he lamented their treatment before the game from irate fans.

“I have six years at the club. I know our owners, they are reasonable people, serious people,” he said. “They care about us, but they never have to explain this type of decision like or ask permission or whatever.

“I speak a lot to them, but was not involved in the process, not at all. I got information yesterday. Nobody knows what will happen. I don’t know anything about that.

“The team has nothing to do with it and I have, not really, anything to do with it, but people treat us like that. The Leeds supporters came here today, before the game they were shouting at us in the city this afternoon.

“We have nothing to do with this. We are employees of the club and I feel responsible for a lot of things at this club. When I am involved in things and I take the criticism easily, but my boys - I don’t think they have to take it as well.

“We are not involved in this. So it’s a tough one at the moment.”
