West Ham technical director Tim Steidten says it is an “honour” to be linked with Liverpool, but says there has been no contact with the Merseyside club over their vacant sporting director role.

The Reds are looking to appoint a new sporting director following the exit of Jorg Schmadtke earlier this month and whoever fills the post will be tasked with leading the hunt for Jurgen Klopp’s successor in the dugout, with the German set to quit the club at the end of the season.

Steidten only arrived at West Ham last summer but has quickly made a strong impression after playing a key role in the successful signings of Mohammed Kudus and Edson Alvarez from Ajax.

Prior to his east London move, Steidten had worked at Bayer Leverkusen alongside Xabi Alonso, the former Liverpool midfielder who is among the favourites to replace Klopp having taken his side clear of Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga.

"I’ve heard that I am supposed to be on the list at Liverpool,” Steidten told Sky Sports Germany. “It is one of the biggest clubs in the world, so it’s an honour.

“But so far nobody from Liverpool has contacted me yet. I generally feel very comfortable at West Ham. I quickly realised how intense this league is.

“Accordingly, we signed the right players in the last transfer windows. The squad is strong, so we can achieve our goals. I am looking forward facing the next weeks and months until the end of the season.

“Of course we are already planning the next window. What happens to the future, we will see.“

Speculation over Steidten’s future adds to the sense of uncertainty surrounding the hierarchy at West Ham, where David Moyes is now into the final six months of his contract.

The Scot is expected to be offered an extension, but plans for a January resolution have stalled, with the club’s board keen to see how the Irons emerge from a slump that has seen them go winless in seven matches since the turn of the year amid growing fan dissent.

There are also questions over the ownership of the club, after joint-chair Vanessa Gold put a proportion of her family’s 25 per cent stake up for sale last year.
