Thiago Alcantara to Liverpool: Bayern expect transfer bid 'in the next few days'

30 August 2020

Thiago Alcantara is increasingly likely to leave Bayern Munich, with the Bundesliga champions expecting a transfer bid for the Liverpool target in the near future.

Thiago, 29, is in the final year of his contract with Bayern and is believed to be keen on linking up with Jurgen Klopp's newly crowned Premier League champions.

Standard Sport understands a Liverpool bid for the Spaniard remains unlikely without a major departure, and even then his injury record and wage demands would likely prove a stumbling block.

However, Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge admits that Thiago's future appears to lie away from Bavaria, with a bid expected over the coming days.

Speaking to German paper Welt am Sonntag, Rummenigge said of Thiago: "It looks like he will leave us.

"It was important for him that he showed that he can play well in the big games.

"When it comes to that, it's a finish that hurts a bit. I expect an offer for him in the next few days."

Liverpool fans hoping that the club's title triumph would unlock a summer of spending have been left disappointed, with Klopp repeatedly warning that the coronavirus pandemic had impacted the club's finances.

The Reds have signed Greek full-back Kostas Tsimikas for £11.75million, though he was signed after Liverpool balked at Norwich City's £20m valuation of Jamal Lewis.

So far this summer, the Reds have sanctioned the £12m sale of Dejan Lovren to join Zenit St Petersburg while allowing both Nathaniel Clyne and Adam Lallana to depart on free transfers.

Klopp recently said of his transfer options: "We cannot just bring exciting players because people want to be busy with that.

"It was every year pretty much the same, I don’t think I ever bought enough players in the transfer window for everybody. It was always like, ‘You need another one!'"
