Jurgen Klopp backs Liverpool star Mo Salah for 2021 Ballon d’Or award

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has backed Mo Salah as a genuine contender to win the Ballon d’Or award next month.

Given the level of the 29-year-old’s performances of late, the Egyptian international has been labelled as ‘the best player’ in the world by his manager. Already this season, Salah has scored ten goals in as many games, including two wonder strikes against Manchester City and Watford respectively.

Included on the 30-man shortlist released earlier this month, Klopp has spoken in favour of his player winning the top individual award in the game, although did admit he wasn’t quite sure on the criteria involved.

“Yes,” replied Klopp when asked about whether or not Salah had a realistic chance during his press conference ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League meeting with Atletico Madrid.

“I have no idea how you win the Ballon d’Or.

“If it’s about being in the Champions League final and scoring the most goals, it may be difficult, but if it’s on the form of the last two years, then he has a chance. Internally he always got the recognition, externally I don’t know.

“After the two goals he has scored people, all of a sudden, think he could be [the best in the world]. He has scored like this before and has performed on the highest level for many years.

“He will do it again and again. Whatever you want to write about him, do it, he deserves it, but now we prepare for Atletico.”
