James Milner will lead England out for the first time when captaining the side against Holland on Tuesday.

Wayne Rooney's injury saw vice-captain Gary Cahill wear the armband in Saturday's remarkable 3-2 win in Germany.

The Chelsea defender is set to start from the bench at Wembley and the Football Association has confirmed Milner will wear the armband instead.

Liverpool midfielder Milner has 57 caps to his name and last played in October's 2-0 win at home to Estonia.

"It means everything," Milner told a pre-match news conference. "Growing up you're desperate to pull on that England shirt - you're scoring goals for England at Wembley in your back garden.

"To lead the team out at Wembley is a massive honour and something you'll never forget."

Euro 2016 may be the 30-year-old’s last international competition after he confirmed earlier this month that he would discuss his future with England manager Roy Hodgson after the tournament in France.

“I don't want to be travelling around and not really contributing and being a good tourist,” Milner said. “I want to contribute and if the manager sees I have a part to play then great and if not it is better for me to set aside and let younger guys travel around.

“I have been in four tournaments and built up a lot of caps and a lot of experience. Travelling around now I can help the younger guys. It's beneficial for a younger guy to come in and travel around.

“That's a conversation I will have with the manager and see where he sees me and if I am going to take on a lesser role it is probably better for someone else to step up.”
