Liverpool's Premier League top four hopes have been dealt a blow with Sadio Mane ruled out for the rest of the season due to a knee injury.

Mane, Liverpool's top scorer this season with 13 Premier League goals, limped off after hurting his knee in a challenge during the Merseyside derby against Everton on Saturday.

Anfield manager Jurgen Klopp said on Friday morning that Mane's left knee needs surgery, confirming "it's clear, season over."

Without Mane, Liverpool drew 2-2 at home to Bournemouth in the Premier League on Wednesday.

Premier League round-up: Chelsea take a big step towards title win

Liverpool are third in the standings with seven games left as they chases Champions League qualification.

Klopp's team won once in seven matches when Mane was last absent for a long period, in January, at the African Nations Cup with Senegal.

The forward has only missed four league games for Liverpool this season, with the Reds failing to win in his absence.
