Bayern Munich star Xherdan Shaqiri has revealed he was wanted by Liverpool in the summer but that the German club refused to let him leave.

The Swiss playmaker’s comments, just weeks before the January transfer window opens, is likely to encourage the Reds to make another move.

Shaqiri, 23, told Swiss newspaper Blick: “After the World Cup I sensed it was better for me to try something else and I wasn’t short of offers.

Liverpool showed the greatest interest but Bayern decided not to let me go and in the end there was nothing I could do.”

“I have to get on with it – we will meet again in the winter and discuss my situation.”

Shaqiri has a contract with the German champions until the summer of 2016 with the option to extend, but has struggled to establish himself as a permanent member of the first team squad at the Allianz Arena.
