Jurgen Klopp has named Jordan Henderson on the bench ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Aston Villa this evening.

The midfielder has been out of action since sustaining a thigh injury in the first half of the Reds’ 2-0 win at Chelsea earlier this month.

But he is now ‘injury free’ according to his boss and in line to play a small part in training on Friday afternoon with one eye on Sunday’s visit to Villa Park.

Klopp is ready for his skipper to pick up much-needed match fitness during the upcoming international break.

He said: “Hendo will be part of parts of the training today. He will start with warming up, maybe some passing, maybe some rondos, we will see as a first step.

“He has absolutely no muscle issues. It is all fine, he is not injured anymore, so now we have to make sure he can make the next step. What that means for the weekend, I don’t know.

“I was in close contact with Gareth Southgate and it is clear he will use the time with the national team for getting match fit because Hendo had four or five days of normal pre-season before he played the first game for us because of the situation we were in. Then played against Chelsea and got this little injury, which was really not serious.

“He is now working on his physical things for a few days already, but now more football specific, which is important with us and then with the national team. He will have minutes for England, I think, which is then a proper win/win situation and I am really happy about that.”

Liverpool are without both Kostas Tsimikas (thigh), Joel Matip (muscle) and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (knee) for Sunday’s game.

Summer signing Thiago Alcantara and Saido Mane are also ruled out until after the international break having tested positive for Covid-19.

But Klopp should have an otherwise fully fit squad to choose from.

Aston Villa: Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Mings, Targett, McGinn, Douglas Luiz, Barkley, Trezeguet, Watkins, Grealish

Liverpool: Adrian, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, van Dijk, Robertson, Keita, Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Salah, Firmino, Jota

Subs: Milner, Henderson, Jones, Minamino, Origi, Kelleher, Neco Williams
