Divock Origi came off the bench to strike a dramatic late winner to keep Liverpool in touch with Manchester City after a last-gasp 1-0 win over Everton in the Merseyside Derby.

The Belgian came on late in the game for Roberto Firmino and headed home in the 96th minute to seal a crucial victory for the Reds to keep them within two points of Pep Guardiola's side.

Everton started on the front foot and Yerry Mina nearly opened the scoring after three minutes, heading wide when unmarked from Luca Digne's free-kick.

Sadio Mane was then sent through by Mohamed Salah but fired over when one-on-one with Jordan Pickford.

His counterpart Alisson Becker had to be on hand to deny Andre Gomes at point-blank range after the Portuguese headed towards goal and with the ball spinning towards the goal line, Reds defender Joe Gomez did superbly to clear in the nick of time.

Xherdan Shaqiri was then sent through by Mane and should have beaten Pickford but struck straight at the England goalkeeper.

Salah, who had an unusually quiet afternoon, did have a couple of chances on goal but didn't trouble Pickford with either effort.

Mane was again played in by Roberto Firmino after the break but could only find the side netting as the game opened up.

But Everton had their chances too and Richarlison threatened on a number of occasions after the break.

Jurgen Klopp rolled the dice and surprisingly brought Salah and Firmino off, sending on Daniel Sturridge and Origi.

And it was the forgotten man Origi who had the best chance to win it late on. Virgil van Dijk headed the ball down at a corner and Origi, unmarked, smashed his effort against the post from three yards out.

But the striker would have the last laugh, capitalising on an error from Pickford as the ball bounced twice onto the crossbar before bouncing invitingly into the path of an unmarked Origi. He headed into an empty net to spark wild celebrations at Anfield, with manager Jurgen Klopp running onto the pitch to celebrate.
