Jurgen Klopp has claimed he felt for Manchester City after they exited the Champions League in heartbreaking fashion at the hands of Tottenham.

But the Liverpool boss insists he has ‘no idea’ how the dramatic events of Wednesday evening will affect the Premier League title race going forward.

City looked set to take their quadruple charge into a European semi-final when Raheem Sterling’s hat-trick goal put them 5-4 up on Spurs on aggregate in injury time at the Etihad Stadium.

However, the strike was eventually overturned by VAR as a result of Sergio Aguero taking up an offside position in the build-up - a decision that sent the visitors through on away goals.

Asked about the potential psychological impact of that blow to his team’s title rivals, Klopp replied: “No idea but it was unbelievable.

“Seeing that and then… wow. I really felt for them, that’s how it is, because everybody thought the ball is in it’s a goal and celebrated.

“I know some people would have said without VAR it’s a clear goal, that’s true, but we would have the discussion afterwards so we would still have a discussion about it.

“It was offside in that moment, that’s how it is, I think nobody really doubts that. But it was tough to take, I’m 100 per cent sure.

“On the other hand side, big compliment to Tottenham with all the problems they had, with all the things they went through.

“I said it at the beginning of the season, Tottenham had the toughest summer of all of us, and not because of not signing anyone but because these players had only two weeks or so holiday.

“Unbelievable [to] then play that season. To score three goals at City is a massive thing so of course they deserve it as well.

“But what’s the influence on the league? I have no idea and we will see that.”
