Liverpool win vs Tottenham was just like Sir Alex Ferguson's Man Utd, says Alan Shearer

Liverpool are winning games just like Manchester United did during Sir Alex Ferguson's title-winning golden years, according to Alan Shearer.

Jurgen Klopp's side have not been at their best since the turn of 2019, but sit top of the Premier League table with seven games to go following a dramatic late 2-1 win over Tottenham on Sunday.

Liverpool went ahead at Anfield through Roberto Firmino's first-half header, though Spurs rallied after the break and had the hosts on the back foot as Lucas Moura equalised.

However, two key events at either end decided the contest: Moussa Sissoko blazed over a late chance after leading a two-on-one break with Heung-min Son against Virgil van Dijk, while Hugo Lloris inexplicably spilled a tame Mohamed Salah header before Toby Alderweireld deflected the ball into Spurs' net for the winning goal.

While Manchester City remain slight favourites for the title with their game in hand, Liverpool are edging closer towards their first League success since 1990.

Liverpool's title drought was all the more painful given Ferguson's decades of success at Old Trafford, with the United boss famously declaring his greatest achievement as "knocking Liverpool right off their f****** perch" as he led United to 13 Premier League titles.

While it is safe to say that few Liverpool fans would appreciate a direct comparison with fierce rivals United on any occasion, former England striker Shearer sees similarities between the teams' abilities to grind out key results when performance levels dip.

"Liverpool got lucky and did not deserve to beat Tottenham," Shearer told The Sun.

"But the way they won was like Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United - it was about great character and sheer endeavour."

Shearer said that while Liverpool got lucky with two 'terrible' errors from Tottenham, they have the look of champions.

"Finding a way to win those games is a great trait to have," he added. "Sometimes you think: 'Is Liverpool’s name on the trophy?'"
