Raheem Sterling and Ross Barkley would cost more than any other England player if they were to be sold today, with Wayne Rooney trailing behind in third.

A study conducted by the Football Observatory, the Swiss-based sports research group which works frequently for FIFA, UEFA and several top European clubs, believes Liverpool attacker Sterling, 19, would be worth £36.6million on the open market. Using a highly detailed statistical model, researchers have concluded that Sterling (left) is the 15th-most valuable player in Europe. One place below him is Everton’s attacking midfielder Barkley, rated at £34.9m, with Rooney in 17th with a price tag of £34.8m.

Within the list of 60 players, which is headed by Lionel Messi (£189.4m), Cristiano Ronaldo (£100.1m) and Luis Suarez (£93.3m), there are six in the England squad, with Daniel Sturridge, Jack Wilshere and Luke Shaw also named. Italy and Uruguay, the two group opponents who are expected to pose the greatest threat to England’s chances of progress at the World Cup, have three and two players respectively in the top 60.

Italians Mario Balotelli, Leonardo Bonucci and Marco Verratti are included, along with Uruguayan forwards Suarez and Edinson Cavani.

“We have been monitoring since 2009 to produce these statistics,” said Dr Raffaele Poli, head of the Football Observatory.

“For each player we take into account multiple criteria and have calculated transfer values for more than 1,500 players.”
