Loic Remy set for QPR but has escape route if they drop

Loic Remy was finalising an £8million transfer to Queens Park Rangers today but the striker will be sold in the summer if the club are relegated.

It is understood that his £80,000‑a-week deal includes a release clause which will be triggered if Rangers, who are bottom of the Premier League, go down in May.

Remy, 26, looked set to join Newcastle but they could not compete with the financial terms Rangers offered once the London club agreed a price with Marseille.

The France international is set to undergo a medical today and will be signed in time to face West Ham in the Premier League on Saturday.

The arrival of Remy and M’Vila will boost QPR, who are five points adrift of safety. Harry Redknapp remains hopeful he can keep them in the top flight, having seen his side beat Chelsea and draw with Tottenham in their last two League matches.

The 65-year-old, who is expected to get a £1m bonus if he keeps the club up, is determined to have a long stay the club, having only joined QPR in November on a two‑and-a-half year deal.

However, when asked in a Q&A in the club’s official magazine by a concerned supporter if he will stay should the club go down, he said: “I don’t want to even think about next season. We’ve got enough to concentrate on at the moment and we’re taking each game as it comes. Let’s hope we pull off the great escape and then have a great party at the end of the season.

“I don’t know [if QPR will be his last job]. I’ve said so many times that this job or that job will be my last and I’m still here now so you never know. I hope I have a really long run here at QPR, be successful and then go off and play golf every day. That’s the plan.”

QPR go to West Brom tonight for a third-round FA Cup replay. Both clubs are expected to make several changes, but QPR are still without Junior Hoilett (hamstring), Bobby Zamora (hip) and Andrew Johnson (knee).
