Louis van Gaal believes that Manchester United's display during the 3-0 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday represents the 'worst' performance his side have produced during his reign.

The Red Devils were blown away by Arsene Wenger's side, who scored three goals in the opening 20 minutes, and surrendered top spot in the Premier League as a result of their collective failure in north London.

The Dutchman has now seen his side lose 10 Premier League fixtures since he took the reins at Old Trafford last summer and rates their latest loss as the poorest.

"Yes, I think so because we were not able to give a normal performance and Arsenal was much better, much more aggressive.

"When you start like that you can never win a game. We lost every duel, every second ball, we were not tight on their midfielders - and they can play."

Van Gaal admitted that he is unsure why so many of his side did not turn up at the Emirates Stadium, particularity as they had been enjoying a rich vein of form beforehand.

"I'm looking for [answers] still because I never have seen that of my team, so that is also the question that I put to my players.

"You cannot solve it at once because there is a lot of emotion, and I am emotional. It was not only one player - then I can take a measure. No, it was more than half of my team that was not doing what we have agreed in our gameplan."

The 64-year-old also bemoaned the poor timing of the international break as he faces a frustrating wait before he can work with his players on how to remedy the mistakes that they made in north London.

"The biggest concern is that the players are flying out from London to go to the national teams, so you cannot prepare for our match against Everton.

"Last international break we lost against Swansea [before it] but won against Liverpool [after it], so we can do it. There's not any issue there, but today was a shock for me."
