Lucky Jose Mourinho thankful for Inter's penalty let-off

Full of respect: Jose Mourinho says he’s looking forward to heading back to his old club

Jose Mourinho today admitted Chelsea should have had a penalty in Milan and he expects to be lucky in the second leg too.

The Blues were stunned when referee Mejuto Gonzalez refused to award a spot‑kick after Salomon Kalou went down under Walter Samuel's challenge last night.

Inter Milan boss Mourinho said: "Yes, we were a bit lucky because when the player is in front of the defender — and Kalou dived at the right moment — normally it is a penalty.

"The referee was not sure, he looked at the linesman and the linesman told him no so he didn't give it."

The second leg will see Mourinho return to Stamford Bridge as an opposing manager for the first time since he was sacked by Chelsea in 2007.

Mourinho won two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and two Carling Cups with the London club and believes that is a good omen for both the reception he will receive on 16 March and the outcome of the tie, which Inter lead 2-1.

He said: "I expect to be welcomed by the fans. They know I loved being at Chelsea for three years. They know I respect them.

"They know I want Inter to be the winner of this tie but they also know that if not I want Chelsea to go on and succeed. And they know that, normally, I am very lucky at Stamford Bridge."
