All League One and Two clubs have been canvassed by the EFL on whether to abandon the season, with a majority thought to be in favour of calling it off.

The EFL are awaiting the Government’s updated guidance on Sunday, as well as the report from a cross-sports working group established to determine how sport can safely resume, which is due next week.

The League will then conduct a feasibility study into whether it is possible to resume the season and could hold a vote as soon as next Thursday.

Clubs believe the expense of playing on behind closed doors, mass testing and re-employing thousands of players and staff who are currently furloughed would be insurmountable, while many think the integrity of the competition would be compromised, given the number of players out of contract on June 30.

The Championship, however, are expected to follow the lead of the Premier League, potentially leading to a messy split in the EFL, which would face a decision on promotion and relegation if Leagues One and Two are abandoned.

Progress is being made, however, over proposed changes for next season, including wage caps.
