Malaga brand UEFA corrupt and call for racism inquiry

Malaga owner Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani today accused UEFA of being “corrupt” as he continued to vent his fury following the club’s controversial Champions League exit away to Borussia Dortmund.

Sheikh Abdullah launched a furious online outburst last night following Malaga’s 3-2 aggregate quarter-final defeat, which saw the hosts score twice in stoppage time to snatch victory.

Malaga were fuming with the decisions made by Scottish referee Craig Thomson and his team of officials, including allowing Felipe Santana’s 93rd-minute goal to stand even though he appeared to score from an offside position.

Sheikh Abdullah last night claimed on Twitter his side were the victims of “racism”, although it was not immediately clear at whom the accusation was directed, and urged UEFA to open an investigation.

And the Qatari owner wrote on Twitter this morning: “Yes, we were targeted from the beginning of the season by corrupt UEFA and based on racism.”

In December, Malaga attacked UEFA after they were handed a one-season ban from European competition — to be imposed if the club qualify for the Champions League or Europa League during any of the next four seasons — due to outstanding debts.

However, Sheikh Abdullah could now be in trouble with UEFA after general secretary Gianni Infantino revealed the tweets will be analysed by the governing body’s disciplinary department.

Infantino added: “If a team lose in the 93rd minute there’s some disappointment and maybe things are said which shouldn’t be said, or which they don’t really think.”
