Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has kept new signing Sergio Gomez on the bench for today’s game against Newcastle.

The left-back arrived at City earlier this week on a four-year deal from Anderlecht, having impressed under the former City captain and current Burnley manager, Vincent Kompany.

Gomez is Oleksandar Zinchenko’s replacement and will compete with Joao Cancelo for minutes, the first of which could come at St James’ Park on Saturday evening after Guardiola confirmed he will travel with the squad.

“He’s ready,” Guardiola told reporters on Friday.

Providing an update on the rest of his squad, the boss added: “Cole [Palmer] is back, Kalvin [Phillips] is back. Some niggles but everyone is okay.”

Erling Haaland failed against Bournemouth to add to his two goals scored against West Ham on the opening weekend, but Guardiola dismissed any early concerns.

“We are delighted with Erling,” he said. “It's just a question of time, making connections. Games, games, games.”

Manchester City XI: Ederson; Walker, Stones, Ake, Cancelo; Rodri, De Bruyne, Gundogan; Bernardo, Haaland, Foden.

Subs: Ortega Moreno, Dias, Phillips, Alvarez, Gomez, Mahrez, Mbete, Palmer, Lewis.
