Manchester United's rivals warned there is more to come after Sheffield Utd demolition

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer promised much more from Manchester United after they swept aside Champions League rivals Sheffield United.

A 3-0 win could have been more emphatic had Marcus Rashford taken two golden chances, with Anthony Martial scoring the club’s first Premier League hat-trick in seven years.

Solskjaer insisted he wasn’t entirely satisfied with the nature of the win – insisting his team have the potential to be even better once Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba develop their partnership.

“At times it was very, very good football,” he said.

“For me we could’ve and should’ve scored more goals and put the game to bed before half-time.

“It’s worrying when you go in at half time knowing you should score two or three more goals.

"But the control and way we pressed and stopped Sheffield United from playing as well was very good.

“I’m very pleased with the performance, but there’s still more to come. We shouldn’t be 100 percent happy with it.”

Solskjaer added: “They tried to press us at times, but it’s vital for us to believe we can play out the press and if teams want to drop off, we can see the connection between Anthony, Mason (Greenwood) Paul and Bruno and we can create chances from those situations as well.

“We should’ve scored more today. We were a little bit lackadaisical with the final pass. When we’re in 100 per cent shape we’ll be better.”

Martial has now scored 19 goals – his best ever return and the perfect response to Solskjaer’s call for him to develop into a top-class finisher.

United’s manager added: “I think the first goal, I think that’s a vital goal.

"But the way he turned and got himself into a position to score from Marcus’ cross, I was very pleased with that one.

“He’s getting more and more into those positions.

“He nearly got a goal against Tottenham as well, a great turn and finish and great save by (Hugo) Lloris. Anthony’s in good form.”
