Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hailed Scott McTominay's development on the goalscoring front after the Manchester United midfielder netted an extra-time winner against West Ham.

A tense fifth-round FA Cup tie at Old Trafford on Tuesday night remained goalless until seven minutes into extra-time, when the Scottish international finished decisively after being teed up by Marcus Rashford to send the Red Devils into the quarter-finals.

That strike was McTominay's seventh of the season in 30 appearances across all competitions and he has now scored in three successive matches, having also notched in Saturday's 3-3 Premier League draw with Everton and in the 9-0 drubbing of Southampton last week.

The 24-year-old had previously scored a total of just seven goals in 84 outings for United before the start of the 2020/21 campaign.

And Solskjaer was eager to praise McTominay for boosting his tally, saying after the win over West Ham: "Scott has really, really developed that part of his game this season.

"Of course we let him go into the box more often, unleash him. He's a very good striker of the ball and a very clinical finisher.

"As he was a forward or a striker in his younger days, you can see his authority when he gets a chance to finish."
