Will Manchester United drop David de Gea? Ole Gunnar Solskjaer vows to make 'right decision' for club

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has vowed to do what’s right for Manchester United as he weighs up whether to drop David de Gea.

The Norwegian was defensive when quizzed about his goalkeeper’s latest high-profile blunder in Sunday’s FA Cup semi final defeat to Chelsea.

But he insists he is not afraid to make big decisions as he comes under growing pressure to take De Gea out of the firing line.

“Every decision is a big one here so you’ve got to do what is right for the team and the club,” he said ahead of the crunch game against West Ham. “We’ll do that on Wednesday.

"We’ll do that on Sunday and then when the season’s finished we’ll make more decisions.”

Asked to confirm whether De Gea would start in a game that would put United on the brink of securing Champions League football, Solskjaer added: “I don’t want to talk about it. We stick together as a group.

“Of course we’re going to stick together as a group and as I said he’s proven before he’s mentally strong. We’ll stay together and we’ll see the team on Wednesday night.”

De Gea was at fault for two of Chelsea’s goals in the 3-1 defeat at Wembley. But Solskjaer shut down questions about his under fire goalkeeper.

With Dean Henderson in outstanding form on loan at Sheffield United, he faces a major decision over whether to recall the academy graduate to provide serious competition for De Gea next season.

But Solskjaer was determined to take the focus off his current No1.

“This is not going to become a David de Gea press conference,” he said. “We’re just going to stick together.

"David’s mentally strong enough to know his job is to perform in training the next day and be ready for the games.

“That’s your job to talk about and write about and my job is to prepare a team for West Ham.

"We’re not going to talk about individuals because no one here will feel we put more pressure on them.”
