Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has suggested that the "core group" of his future Manchester United team are already in place as he looks to avoid setting in motion a major squad overhaul.

United are currently in pursuit of a deal for Sporting Lisbon captain Bruno Fernandes as they seek to bolster their midfield options amid injuries suffered by Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay.

Many frustrated fans believe that the club are in need of a succession of high-profile signings of that ilk to help them make up ground on the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City, and while Solskjaer is searching for one or two additions, he appears keen to avoid a full-scale overhaul.

Instead, he has clearly been impressed by the emergence of academy talents such as Mason Greenwood, whom the manager believes should be allowed to focus on his development before talk of an England senior cap.

"This is a group you can work with," Solskjaer said. "They're going to give you everything. That's the core of what the team is going to be moving forward, for me.

"Of course we're looking at a couple of signings and strengthening here and there but the core group is there."
