Manchester United fans killed while watching match in Nigeria

At least seven people were killed when a power a cable fell on them as they watched a Manchester United match on TV.

The cable fell on a shack in the city of Calabar as Manchester United beat Anderlecht 2-1 in the Europa League last night.

Witnesses described how they saw a flash of light from a transformer which sent fans scurrying, packing them together before a “high tension” cable fell on them.

At least 30 people were taken to hospital after the incident.

The club this morning tweeted a tribute after the news broke of the tragedy last night.

They said: “Our thoughts go out to the United fans, their friends and families affected by the tragedy in Calabar, Nigeria, yesterday.”

State governor Ben Ayade said: “The incident marks a dark chapter in the life of the state where the precious lives of football lovers have been lost.

“At this point in time, it is sad to know that the victims lost their lives at a viewing centre where they usually converge, at their leisure time to watch their matches.”
