Manchester United's Jose Mourinho: The gods of football were with Newcastle's 'animals'

Tom Doyle11 February 2018

Jose Mourinho claimed that "the gods of football" were with Newcastle as the Manchester United manager hailed the Magpies for fighting like "animals" to win at St James' Park.

Matt Ritchie's first goal of the season for Newcastle condemned Mourinho's Red Devils to a shock 1-0 defeat on Tyneside.

The Scotland winger tucked Dwight Gayle's lay-off into the bottom corner in the 65th minute of play, with Chris Smalling conceding the free-kick with a dive inside his own half before Paul Pogba failed to clear the delivery.

A first Premier League win in five outings lifts Newcastle out of the relegation zone while leaving United 16 points adrift of leaders Manchester City.

Mourinho told Sky Sports following the match: "They fought like animals - I hope they take that as a compliment.

"The gods of football were on their side. It wasn't going to happen for us today. Newcastle gave what they have and what they don't have, that's a beautiful thing in football.

"They fought for their point, a point is what they had in mind.

"We made a defensive mistake and when they are in front they had only one thing in mind and gave their lives to keep a clean sheet."
