Manchester United are planning a testimonial for Wayne Rooney following a campaign from fans urging the club to recognise the striker's service to the club.

Rooney moved to Old Trafford from Everton in 2004 for £27million and has since gone on to win five Premier League titles, two League Cups and a solitary Champions League medal.

He is currently third on United's all-time scoring charts with 236 goals and just 14 goals short of overtaking leading goalscorer Sir Bobby Charlton, whose record international tally Rooney passed in September.

Rooney has revealed his intention to donate every penny raised from the testimonial event to four charities close to his heart: NSPCC, Alder Hey Childrens' Hospital, Claire House Children's Hospice and the Manchester United Foundation.

It is understood the match, which will pit a Manchester United XI against a visiting side yet to be determined, will be held next summer, when Rooney will celebrate 12 years at the club.

Despite drawing criticism from supporters for his performances in the early part of this season, Rooney thanked those who have got behind him since moving from Goodison Park.

"I would like to thank everyone involved in making this testimonial become a reality," the United captain said.

"Most of all I want to thank the fans for all their incredible support for me and the team since I joined the club.

"The match night will obviously be special for me and my family but I hope it will be a night of celebration for all involved and that we can also deliver one or two surprises.

"Most of all I hope the fans will come out in force and help raise as much money as possible for these amazing charities, all of which are very close to my heart for different reasons."
