Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has heralded the club's move to introduce a new signing section at Old Trafford as a 'great idea'.

The 32 year-old midfielder tweeted his support for the move to trial a 1,400 seat singing section for the Champions League home game against Real Sociedad.

Carrick posted: “Great idea to have a singing section. If I was going as a fan that's where I'd be...”

It's not the first time the club have attempted to boost the atmosphere at Old Trafford.

In April they appointed an acoustic engineer to increase noise levels.

Dale O’Donnell, of United website Stretty News, is one of those who has campaigned for the section.

“The atmosphere for some home games can resemble a library and we want to change that,” he said.

On Saturday at Old Trafford, visiting Crystal Palace fans taunted home supporters with chants such as: "Is this a library?"
