Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal told reporters 'it's over' as he left the club's hotel on Sunday morning.

The team are staying in London following an extra-time victory over Crystal Palace in Saturday's FA Cup Final.

It was the club's first trophy success since Sir Alex Ferguson left Old Trafford in 2013, but Van Gaal's celebrations would've been muted as it emerged after the trophy presentation that he is set for the axe next week.

It is understood Jose Mourinho will take charge of the club in the coming days and is likely to take the reins for the first time against Borussia Dortmund in Shanghai on June 22.

And Van Gaal appeared to confirm the news on Sunday morning when telling Sky Sports News HQ: "It's over."

The Dutchman had expected to see out his three-year contract with United and told reporters he would see them in August for the final season of his deal following victory over Bournemouth on the last day of the Premier League season.

The 3-1 win left United fifth and unable to qualify for next season's Champions League as major doubts surrounded the manager's future. Van Gaal went on to lead his side to FA Cup success on Saturday, but it seems to have done little to sway the United hierarchy as they prepare to meet with Mourinho's agent Jorge Mendes.
