Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson confirms he will not return to Sheffield United for third loan spell

Dean Henderson has confirmed he will not be returning to Sheffield United on loan having returned to parent club Manchester United.

The 23-year-old enjoyed a highly successful two-year loan spell with the Blades, during which time he played a pivotal role both in their promotion to the Premier League and subsequent impressive ninth-placed top-flight finish.

Despite his stellar form and the dip in performances from current no1 David de Gea, Standard Sport understands that Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is determined to stick with the Spaniard as his first-choice goalkeeper.

The Norwegian has also admitted that there is not enough space in the squad for De Gea, Henderson and Sergio Romero, and is open to another loan move for the former Blades man.

Sheffield United are close to sealing the signing of Bournemouth goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale for £18.5million, while reports have claimed Henderson is close to signing a new £100,000-a-week contract amid links with Chelsea.

Taking to social media on Wednesday, Henderson said: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at Sheffield United for the last two years.

"Winning promotion to the Premier League with my brothers and having the season we had this season is something I will never forget.

"I would like to thank the manager, my team-mates, the backroom staff and, of course, the fans, who have been unbelievable towards me.

"I will look back at the last two years as an important chapter in my career and more than anything, I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to learn and develop with such a class group of lads.

"I can't wait for the next chapter! Once again, thank you for everything! Once a Blade, always a blade!"

Henderson is yet to make any senior appearances for Manchester United, and will now likely join his team-mates in pre-season training ahead of the September 12 Premier League start.

Whether he will go out on loan once more remains to be seen.
