Manchester United XI vs Atletico Madrid: Starting lineup, confirmed team news and Champions League injuries

Jonathan Gorrie23 February 2022

Edinson Cavani is once again absent as Manchester United head to Spain to face Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie tonight.

Cavani has been struggling with a groin problem and United’s interim manager Ralf Rangnick confirmed in the build-up that the Uruguayan striker has not travelled with the squad.

After the bruising 4-2 win over Leeds in the Premier League on Sunday, Rangnick had kept his cards close to his chest about other fitness issues ahead of the first-leg meeting at the Wanda Metropolitano. Scott McTominay misses out on the squad completely, as Fred partners Paul Pogba in midfield.

Victor Lindelof looks set to start at right-back, with Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka both named on the bench. Marcus Rashford is preferred up front alongside Cristiano Ronaldo to Anthony Elanga.

Phil Jones is now eligible to play for United in Europe after being added to their Champions League squad and he is named on the bench, alongside Nemanja Matic who made his return from an injury lay-off by being on the bench at Elland Road.

Man United starting XI: De Gea, Lindelof, Maguire, Varane, Shaw, Fred, Pogba, Fernandes, Sancho, Rashford, Ronaldo

Subs: Heaton, Henderson, Telles, Bailly, Dalot, Jones, Wan-Bissaka, Hannibal, Lingard, Mata, Matic, Elanga
