Manchester United's David De Gea was set to sign £8.5m-a-year deal at Real Madrid

Late hitch: David De Gea was set to sign a six-year deal
James Olley9 February 2016

David De Gea was on the brink of signing a six-year contract worth £8.5million a year at Real Madrid before his transfer from Manchester United collapsed last summer, writes James Olley

Football Leaks — who previously published documents detailing high-profile deals involving Gareth Bale, Anthony Martial, Mesut Ozil and Radamel Falcao — have released copies of the agreement De Gea was due to sign. The deal fell through on deadline day amid a row over paperwork and a failure to enter the requisite information into FIFA’s Transfer Management System in time.

In addition to his salary, De Gea would also have received sizeable bonuses depending on which trophies Real won.

He signed a £200,000-a-week contract at United shortly after talks with Real ended but they are expected to renew their interest in the summer with speculation persisting that the 25-year-old has a £30m buyout clause in his new deal.
