Manchester United's Gareth Bale bid will fail

Tottenham will ignore any attempt by Manchester United to sign Gareth Bale.

New United manager David Moyes and executive vice chairman Ed Woodward want to kick-start a new era at Old Trafford, following the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson and David Gill, by making a major signing and Bale is one of their targets.

They have been linked with a £60million bid but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will reject all offers, just as he did with Real Madrid. The Spanish club have given up the fight until next year, while Spurs are still looking to secure the Wales international on a new deal.

Woodward has returned from United’s pre-season tour early to work on a transfer but it is believed his priority is Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas.

Meanwhile, Tottenham target Christian Benteke is understood to have reported for training with Aston Villa today.

Spurs hope to sign Benteke, who handed in a transfer request last week, but Aston Villa will not sell for less than £25m.
