Benjamin Mendy writes to FA in defence of Man City team-mate Bernardo Silva after controversial tweet

Benjamin Mendy has written to the FA in defence of Bernardo Silva over a controversial tweet, described as a “racial stereotype.”

Bernardo submitted his own letter to English football’s governing body on Thursday night expressing his regret over any unintentional offence caused.

Racism charity Kick it Out called for the FA to act after the Manchester City playmaker posted a picture comparing Mendy to a cartoon character associated with a brand of Portuguese chocolate.

Pep Guardiola launched another impassioned defence of his player on Friday – but insisted there would be no repeat of the incident.

City will hope Bernardo’s contrition, as well as the support of Mendy will see the Portugal international avoid punishment.

The FA have introduced a minimum six-game ban for anyone found guilty of racist abuse during matches.

As this incident occurred on social media, it is not clear if the 25-year-old would face the same punishment if found guilty.

The FA are also investigating a video Bernardo posted online in which he asks Mendy, dressed all in black, why he is not wearing any clothes.

If found guilty it’s understood the FA would recommend a ban and educational course.

Guardiola claimed not to know about the earlier video, but reiterated his support of his player.

“Regarding Bernardo I was incredibly clear,” said the City manager. “If they believe, if the people believe, that Bernardo is this type of player they are completely wrong. They judged one joke, I judge three years every single day with him and how he is and his friendship.“We judge intentions and I know the intention of Bernardo.

“It was just a joke. Benjamin is like a brother to Bernardo. And Bernardo is like a brother to Benjamin. It is the same, it was what I see every day in training.“If someone is affected or feels bad about that tweet or any comments, so it can happen.

“People judging Bernardo don’t know him. He is an exceptional person. Exceptional.

“Focus on other issues, not Bernardo because he is absolutely not guilty because of his intention. It was just a joke. It’s a cartoon and the face is quite similar. The same happened a thousand million times with white people. It’s the same.

“But if the people in the FA think it’s the opposite then Bernardo and City are open to listen and to say an opinion.

“It was a simple joke but if someone is offended I can understand it. Bernardo is maybe going to take a lesson and it’s not going to happen again.”
